Design for Sustainability
Sustainability Victoria, the DIA, Centre for Design at RMIT, and Product Ecology are partners in an exciting program called
Design for Sustainability (DfS). DfS is about developing products in a way that reduces their environmental impact.
Designers are uniquely positioned to ‘lock-out’ negative environmental impacts while ‘locking in’ positive features and attributes.
The DfS program is aiming to shift sustainable thinking to the beginning of the product life cycle, where most of a product’s environmental impacts are locked in.
Quickstart onlineTo help you incorporate DfS in your designs, free DfS ‘Quickstart’ downloads are available from www.sustainability.vic.gov.au.
The DfS Quickstart series is made up of concise, easy to digest, information sheets.
Each Quickstart covers a different topic or theme related to environmentally-friendly product design, including material selection, regulation and a glossary of DfS terms.
All back issues are available on Sustainability Victoria’s website.
Visit DfS at designEX/Form & FunctionTo see a range of sustainable, mainstream products, visit the DfS stand (No. 800) at the 2007 designEX/Form & Function exhibition, Melbourne Exhibition Centre, 19 - 21 April 2007.
Sustainability Victoria and the DfS Partnership are also hosting a workshop and two seminars:
Workshop Headstart: Design for Sustainability Partnership,
Presented by Nicholas Johns, Centre for Design at RMIT
Aimed specifically at interior and furniture designers, Headstart will focus on integrating sustainable principles in the design process.
Specialising in sustainable product development, participants will gain an invaluable insight into current sustainable trends within the industry, as well as participating in a practical design exercise applying the Rapid Assessment Tool (RAT) methodology.
SeminarsDesign for Sustainability: from brief to product – 3 designers’ stories
Speakers: Paul Charlwood, Charlwood Design; Warwick Brown, Cobalt Niche Design, and Alex Knott, Alex Knott Design
Three winners of Sustainability Victoria’s Small Grants Awards for Designers will share their stories on working with clients to integrate sustainability considerations into their product design brief.
Victorian Solar Cities Initiative: a talk for architects on two case studies
Presented by Lisa Crowley, Sustainability Victoria
Sustainability Victoria’s solar innovation program encourages the innovative use of solar design and technologies to heat, cool, light and ventilate a building, to reduce energy consumption and energy costs, while improving indoor comfort.
This presentation outlines preliminary findings from the demonstration phase of the program, where solar solutions have been installed into 36 community buildings across Victoria.
